Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a mental health condition involving intrusive, unwanted thoughts or fears and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals used to reduce distress.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is categorized in the DSM-5 as an Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorder. OCD can involve persistent, intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or fears, often called obsessions, that cause significant anxiety or distress. In response, individuals may feel driven to complete repetitive behaviors or mental rituals, known as compulsions, in an attempt to reduce discomfort, gain reassurance, or prevent a feared outcome.
OCD can affect children, adolescents, and adults, and symptoms may interfere with daily routines, school, work, relationships, sleep, and overall quality of life. Common concerns may include fears related to contamination, harm, mistakes, symmetry, checking, reassurance-seeking, or unwanted intrusive thoughts. OCD is not simply being “neat” or “particular”; it is a distressing condition that can become time-consuming and difficult to manage without appropriate support.
