Everything you need to know about getting started, what to expect, and how we work.
How do I refill my prescription?
Prescription refills are managed during your scheduled follow-up appointments. To ensure uninterrupted access to your medications, please schedule your follow-up before your current prescription runs out. We recommend reaching out when you have approximately two weeks of medication remaining.
For refill requests outside of a scheduled appointment, please contact our office through the patient portal. Please allow up to three business days for processing. Note that certain controlled substances require a scheduled visit for renewal and cannot be refilled by phone or portal message alone. Stimulant medications and benzodiazepines are subject to state prescribing regulations that govern how and when refills may be issued.
How is my health information protected?
Your health information is protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). We use secure, encrypted systems for all electronic communication, including our patient portal, telehealth platform, and electronic health records. Your information will never be shared with third parties without your written consent, except as required by law — for example, in situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others.
If you have questions about how your information is used, or would like to review our full HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices, please contact our office or ask your provider at your next appointment.
What technology do I need for telehealth appointments?
For telehealth appointments, you will need a device with a camera and microphone — a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer all work well. You will also need a reliable internet connection and a private, quiet space where you feel comfortable speaking openly about your health.
We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You will receive a link to your appointment via email before your visit. No downloads are required for most devices — you can typically join through your web browser. If you experience technical difficulties, please contact our office and we will help troubleshoot or reschedule if needed.
Is telehealth as effective as in-person psychiatric care?
Research consistently shows that telehealth psychiatric services — particularly for medication management — are as effective as in-person care for most patients and most conditions. Many patients find that the convenience of telehealth improves their consistency in attending appointments, which is one of the most important factors in treatment success.
There are some clinical situations where an in-person visit is preferred or required — for example, certain initial evaluations, cases requiring physical assessment, or situations involving safety concerns. Your provider will advise you if your care requires in-person attendance at any point.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you provide at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice, or no-shows, may be subject to a late cancellation fee, which is billed directly to you and is not billable to insurance.
We understand that unexpected circumstances arise. If you have an emergency, please contact our office as soon as possible and we will work with you. Consistent attendance supports your progress in treatment, and we are here to help you stay on track.
Do you accept my insurance?
We are in-network with several major insurance carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Cigna. For patients with United Healthcare, we are an out-of-network provider — your insurance may reimburse a portion of your costs depending on your out-of-network benefits. Please contact your insurance company to understand your specific coverage.
We also welcome self-pay patients. Please contact our office to verify your specific insurance coverage and understand your expected out-of-pocket costs before scheduling. Insurance participation can change, so we encourage you to verify your benefits directly with your carrier prior to your first appointment.
How long does the initial evaluation take?
Standard initial psychiatric evaluations are scheduled for 60 minutes. Patients with complex histories or multiple presenting concerns may be scheduled for a 90-minute comprehensive assessment instead. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure all paperwork is complete. If you are a telehealth patient, log in to the secure video platform at least five minutes before your scheduled start time.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Before your first appointment, you will be asked to complete intake paperwork through our patient portal, including your health history, insurance information, current medications (with doses), and a description of your primary concerns. If you have records from previous psychiatric treatment — including prior evaluations, medication lists, or therapy notes — please bring those or request that they be sent in advance. Having this information ready allows your provider to make the most of your time during the evaluation.
