A trauma-related condition involving intrusive memories, emotional numbing, hypervigilance, and avoidance following a traumatic experience.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to a traumatic event, such as physical or sexual violence, a serious accident, natural disaster, combat, or the unexpected loss of a loved one. Symptoms typically include intrusive flashbacks or nightmares, emotional numbing, difficulty connecting with others, hypervigilance, irritability, and active avoidance of reminders of the trauma.
PTSD can also develop from repeated or chronic trauma — sometimes called complex PTSD — which may involve more pervasive difficulties with identity, relationships, and emotional regulation. Our evaluation explores both acute and developmental trauma histories with care and sensitivity.
Medication management can play an important supportive role in PTSD treatment, reducing the intensity of symptoms while patients engage in trauma-focused psychotherapy. We coordinate closely with therapists trained in evidence-based trauma treatments, including EMDR and Prolonged Exposure, to provide integrated care.
